WOW...they grow up so fast. One minute you're changing their diapers, then before you know it...erh...wait, what I meant to say was, I can't believe you're already 21 Jon. It seemed like only yesterday we were talking about how I would be retired by the time you turned 21. I remember meeting Jon at the Grapevine mills skatepark back in circa 2001. Ever since I met him I knew he was a kind kid with a good head on his shoulders and he hasn't dissapointed me at all. One of, if not the nicest person I have ever met. Always has a great vibe even when he's upset. Puts a smile on my face when I see him and is a bad ass skateboarder. I love him like I love my little brother. Hope you have a great birthday kid, I work tonight...stop by, I'll buy you a few drinks.

Irving Skatepark part Deux

I used to hate this park but now the more that I go there its not so bad. PLus a flask of Jameson helps out a lot to calm my jitterness and anti-social anxiety. There were a lot of people at first but it cleared out soon enough. I ran into some cats that just moved here from Wisskhansin (Wisconsin) Pretty cool guys. Fun to skate with. Made it more tolerable in a park full of suburban thugs and little shits on razor scooters and bikes. I never understood why people, that clearly don't know how to skate or ride ramps on any kind of 2 or 4 wheeled toy, would come to a park and just take up room and do absolutely shit but get in everyones way...boggles my mind. I know I know, world doesn't revolve around me and it is a "public skatepark" but c'mon gimme a break.
Speaking up breaks...Some kid that always goes up there broke his ankle trying to skate. Ive been there before so i feel for him, but don't skate if you don't know how to. I know accidents happen but I mean, I think martial arts are cool but I aint gonna go try and kick Jet Lee's ass and a baker wouldn't try to perform surgery on a person. It's common sense shit, don't do something you don't how to do. Set youre an asshole is probably what your thinking...but you already knew that.

So I've been skating a lot more recently. Forgot how much I loved it...actually I didn't forget. I just got lazy, plus I hate skating by myself even though I hate people. It was nice to see old faces and skate. Must do it more often. I played hookie last Wednesday and ran into some friends at the park. Van's Downtown Showdown Trip

So this past weekend John Carroll and I went to Paramount Pictures studios to checkout the Van's Downtown Showdown. Although John was telling me he had seen better obstacles in the past (I suck at staying in the loop with shit like this), I was pretty stoked on the whole thing. The whole event was in the middle of one of their largest sets; a city street set with the whole nine yards: this place looked totally real if I hadn't known where we were. It was strait out of scene you'd see in the big city, just with goofy ramps in the shape of pentagrams, and crescent moon and stars. First night there I got carded at the practice session and pulled the I'm from out of town: don't have an ID... but I was not slick enough, dude totally knew the score , but gave me a beer anyway. Trust me to find my way to a drink. We got there late because some bird decided it would be cool to fly into one of the engines on the plane before take off. Getting there late, we ended up not hanging around too long during the practice session. Steve Van Doren was cookin' up a mad storm behind the grill as usual, and I stuffed my face with a quesadilla slice, before we called it a night and headed to the hotel.

After getting lost, even with Carroll's trusty map at hand, we ended up making it back to the hotel.I thought it was pretty rad, and got suckered as soon as we opened the door, cause I thought our comforters for the beds were made out of real zebras! Much to my disappointment it was just a print, but hey it fooled me for a second. This hotel even went so far as to hang artsy, high-res photos of tits and legs and hang them above our beds. I called tits right away; If you see the photos you'll know what I'm talking about.
Carroll made some good points on how Hollywood isn't really the glamor you'd expect unless your an idiot without eyes. It was weird, there would be a liquor store, shitty retail joints, a pollo loco and then some famous place you'd never expect to see next all this crap. Hollyweird for sure.
The second day was the real adventure, we stopped by all the shops near our hotel: SLB, HUF, Supreme, Alife, undefeated, Stussy, The Hundreds, and I think Flight Club too. They were all next to each other, so it was like hitten 8 birds with 2 stones (we used the car twice). SLB was rad as fuck; reminded me of index because we got to hangout and shoot the shit with Sal Barbier. When we stopped by Supreme we ran into John Humphries, photographer for SLAP, and nike, and Jason Dill. That place is pricey... I wish I could charge someone $80.00 for a baseball raglan shirt. Cool experience non the less. I wish I could have skated the bowl in the back, tht thing looks so fun to skate. I love the idea of having a bowl in the shop sort of floating behind the camera...
I think we had not taken a piss in 4 hours or so and it would be about another 2 or so before got to. We were hungry and looking for an in and out burger and somehow the shit turned into Harold and Kumar; we searched so long for that fuckin place... oh yeah and then I lost the map by this time. I figured since Carroll was a Native American he would bust out his navigation skills, but it didn't happen. We after saying "screw lunch, we'll be late" we got over to Paramount studios and got to see the madness unfold...
Van's Downtown Showdown
It was definitely a different vibe than I thought I would see, but it was rad. Everyone is friends out there, and everyone was just hangin' around at the competition, either skating, or enjoying a beer with some friends. I liked that part: just to see all these people I've only seen in magazines all in the same area, but like just normal people at the same time. It really brought the whole seeing a pro down to earth. I've never really fanned out and being able to see all those dudes was cool because it was like seeing anyone else, but I recognized the fact that I've watched them skate since I was a kid. Everyone was throwing there bodies down or over the obstacles like carcasses, and I started to feel a little lazy like I don't try to hard when I skate. Either way it was bad ass to see proper execution of tricks on some ridiculous stuff. Some thing funny I just remembered is that we were eating with Johny Layton's grandma for like twenty minutes before we realized Johny was her grandson. We were just talking about this and that and she kept referring to grandson who was skating in the thing, but we didn't ask. A few other relatives come over and sit down, and before we knew it Johny Layton rolls up and says hey to the family. I thought it was pretty sick his whole family was there supporting him and hangin out with everyone. Layton is a pretty sick dude.
After the event was in the award announcing stage, the night seemed to be winding down, but little did I know what would be in store afterwards. We said our goodbyes to everyone and made way for some long awaited In and Out burger... I swear that place is always busy, doesn't matter at what time of day that place is packed. We ate those burgers quick and went back to the hotel. John was hangin out up in the room checking internet stuff, and I was in the bar mingling it up. I was already a little worked at this point. Some dude walked by and dropped off a stack of get in free cards for the gentleman's club down the way and I talked John into it since, I had never been to one. By the end of the night I was broke and well on my way to a sizable headache for the morning to follow.
After it was all said and done we checked out of the hotel ad enjoyed one last car ride done sunset blvd. I was passed out on the plane and it felt like a 45 minute flight... As soon as we landed I realized that the good life was coming to a halt and I would once again return to the world of reality and responsibilities. It was nice to be back though, but I loved the trip.
Special thanks from me and John Carroll go out to Scott Pfaff, Steve, and Kristy Van Doren for opportunity and hospitality. We had a great time, and got to see some rad stuff.

I always thought this dude's skating was so rad. Im pretty bummed that he is gone. It's not like I knew the guy personally, but when I found out the news it was like some one dropped an anvil in my stomach. I don't think I totally accept it yet, like he didn't die. His departure and the fact that I really looked up to his skating makes me wish I would have been able to him him once. yeah yeah yeah, I know I have been slackin on this shitty blog, but it was a holiday weekend. No not Labor Day, my birfday. You shoulda been there, it was a great time.
First blasted it off to Sachse to this, according to Jorge, "secret waterhole" and swam and jumped off a small little cliff. Scary but fun. It only took 30 minutes for everyone to have the balls and try it. The water was murky and honestly pretty fucking sketchy. Cant say I had the balls to jump right in. Celeste didn't have a top on so she decided it was a good idea to wear my shirt, so all I had to wear on the ride home was Jorge's dad's vest. So biker cliche but I love that thing.

Then, I showed up to my work place with a leather vest and no shirt on. Im sure my coworkers were thinking "what the french toast?" but meh, whatever. My boss also gave me a sweet ice cream brownie birfday desert. Delicious. I dont have pictures of the rest of the night cause I didnt have my camera but then we went to Sushi Zushi for dinner, back to Idle Rich to re-group with the rest of the ppl and finally Silver City!!! Yeah! Never been there before, I know it's hard to believe assholes but I dont go to strip clubs much, but it was a blast. Had quite uh few lap dances and a few shots and parted ways back to Dallas where we met up at the Old Monk. Ended up being an awesome birthday!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH TO all that came out/contributed or that wished me a happy bday.

Dear Alcohol,

First & foremost, let me tell you that I’m a huge fan of yours. As my friend, you always seem to be there when needed. The perfect post-work cocktail, a beer at the skatepark, and you’re even around at the holidays, hidden inside chocolates, as you warm us when we’re stuck in the midst of endless family gatherings. However, lately I’ve been wondering about your intentions. While I want to believe that you have my best interests at heart, I feel that your influence has led to some unwise consequences:

Phone calls: While I agree with you that communication is important, I question the suggestion that any conversation of substance or necessity takes place after 2 a.m. Why would you make me call those ex-girlfriends when I know for a fact they do not want to hear from me during the day, let alone all hours of the night.

Eating: Now, you know I love a good meal, but why do you suggest that I eat a taco with fire sauce, along with a big Italian meatball and some stale bbq chips (washed down with the wine gifts & topped off with a Kit Kat after a few cheese curls & chili cheese fries)? I’m an eclectic eater, but I think you went too far this time.

Clumsiness: Unless you’re subtly trying to tell me that I need to do more yoga to improve my balance, I see NO need to hammer the issue home by causing me to fall down. It’s completely unnecessary, the black & blue marks that appear on my body mysteriously the next day are beyond me and the seeing all the pictures of what I did the night before are embarrasing. Similarly, it should never take me more than 45 seconds to get the front door key into the lock.

Furthermore: The hangovers have GOT to stop. This is getting ridiculous. I know a little penance for our previous evening’s debauchery may be in order, but the 3pm hangover immobility is completely unacceptable. My entire day is shot. I ask that, if the proper precautions are taken (water, vitamin B, bread products, aspirin) prior to going to sleep/passing out face down on the kitchen floor with a bag of popcorn, the hangover should be minimal & in no way interfere with my daily activities.

Alcohol, I have enjoyed our friendship for some years now & would like to ensure that we remain on good terms. You’ve been the invoker of great stories, the provocation for much laughter, and the needed companion when I just don’t know what to do with the extra money in my pockets.

In order to continue this friendship, I ask that you carefully review my grievances above & address them immediately. As for now, Im sorry to say that I need a break from you, later down the road we can continue this fruitful partnership. I hope you understand.

What a nice guy... so i drank by myself on my 21st bday. Although Dameon did get me an awesome porno mag from the convinience store. that was rad, I still had it to this day as a memoir but my ex threw it away when she found it....lame.

woke up few hours later...on the road again. Went to the beach aka "lewisville lake"

While I was down in Veracruz, Mexico I actually bumped into Pancho Villa... he was at this cantina off 20 Noviembre avenue... after a few shots of some real nasty stuff, we put photo faces on for this local photographer. I know he looks a little waxy, but hell it was mad humid in that place, not to mention Pancho was rollin deep layers of cloth, leather, bullets, and awesome. He told me he lurked around that area quite a bit so I gotta look out next time I'm in the area. Next time the shots are on him.

No it's not that kind of test!
Went back to school to take my test/exam since i got paranoid and had a panic attack last time i tried. Guess what? I eint ass stoopid ass i tought i wuz! Scored perfect on my essay and 96 on everything else....except for college algebra which i suck at but hey, it's been 9 damn years since I took it...gimme a break!
Anywho, my advisor said I must read and write a lot due to not taking any college courses in the past 9 years (except for EMT) and scoring so high. Got dat hoe fooled!
It may not be a great feat but I'm stoked as fuck! And of course there are ladies everywhere...most of which are 18 but hey! age is just a number. I get older and they stay the same age.So I guess Im officially a college student???

Somehow we decided that after work, Saturday night, it would be a good idea to go to an after hours club of off Harwood in the hood. Let me tell you...nothing good goes on at that time. Ended up getting busted by the cops. As bad and as sketchy as the area was, the people were cool as shit. We tried to hit up a tejano bar, but the record scratched as soon we walked in. We'd figure we would be more welcome with our own kind. I guess Africans and Jamaicans like us more than Mexicans. Jorge ended up at the strip club...i ended up on the couch....enough partying for one night.

but the Little Giants video I refer to doesn't star Al Bundy. It's about former Alien Workshop artist Don Pendleton, and it's the first issue in a series that tells the stories of some of skateboarding's established artists. It's not half bad; perhaps a little short, but it definitely gives you a decent look into the life and work of the artist. I'm not gonna lie I felt like picking up a pen and doodling after watching it, but then I realized my patience sucks and started scribbling out all my shit. I think I would be interested in creating art out of beer cans, ones that I have killed myself. Isn't that perfect? your drunk and feeling a little creative maybe, so fuck taking out the trash... why not just erect a castle gray skull out of Budweiser... If you feel like seeing some background, as well as artwork from one of skateboarding's influential artists, give it a try.
